Job Title: Accounting & Audit Intern Reports to: CFO/Controller Position Overview The Accounting and Audit Intern is a unique opportunity for individuals interested in exploring the many aspects of a career in accounting in the non-profit sector, and specifically in an educational setting.
The Accounting & Audit Interns will gain hands-on experience, allowing them to explore a career in private accounting with Mary McDowell Friends School (MMFS) and assist in executing actual audit projects.
From the very beginning, The Accounting and Audit Intern is immersed in MMFS school culture.
The Intern will also receive training to grow and develop their skill set.
This full-time, paid internship program starts in May and goes until July.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties: Assist in the preparation of monthly financial statements including bank reconciliations Review, revise, and document internal activity controls Become familiar with and adhere to the school's policies and procedures as they relate to being an efficient and professional team member.
Perform account reconciliations and investigate any discrepancies.
Assist with monthly journal entries and perform true-ups for accounts.
Draft financial statements under the school’s prescribed format.
Comply with established accounting practices and quality control procedures and systems.
Prepare portions of compilation, review, and audit engagements.
Develop a working knowledge of all microcomputer applications, which are routinely used.
Become knowledgeable about accounting pronouncements and demonstrate an understanding of functions relating to basic income tax.
Develop awareness of budget constraints vs.
quantity of work needed on files.
Learn the rules, regulations, and code of professional conduct established by the AICPA Support the department with various ad-hoc projects Supervisory Responsibility This position has no supervisory responsibilities but will work closely with all members of the business office.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work This is a full-time, program beginning mid/late May through July.
Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.
m.
to 5 p.
m.
, with a half-hour paid lunch.
Evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand and will be scheduled in advance.
This position is designed as a summer internship.
Travel No travel is necessary.
Work Environment & Physical Demands This job requires the ability to maintain the physical capacity required to navigate a typical office located in a school environment.
This position will begin on-site and move into remote for approximately 4 weeks.
The ability to sit and stand for long periods of time, as necessary.
This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets.

Requirements: Required Education & Experience Working toward completion of BS or MS in accounting or business Must have at least 75% of the 150-credit CPA requirement completed from an accredited university Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with all levels of employees, management, and external agencies to maximize performance and problem-solving and to achieve results Must be customer-focused and able to multitask Detail-oriented, analytical, and highly organized Demonstrated ability to work independently to prioritize multiple projects, and handle complex tasks Willingness to learn and adapt to a new environment is required Preferred Education & Experience Proficiency in MS Office and G Suite applications.
