Role Description Global Financial Institutions Group (GFIG) is seeking an Associate to join the Insurance Client Coverage team.
The role entails supporting a team that advises insurance companies and sponsors on financing and liquidity solutions, capital optimization, and capital raising in the public and private markets.
In addition to its advisory and capital markets role, this team acts as a lender to SMBC’s Insurance client base and is also responsible for cross selling clients on the full suite of Corporate & Investment Banking products (derivatives, FX, etc.
).
Role Objectives Strong team orientation with a demonstrated ability to work effectively with team members in multiple product groups and regions Experience navigating insurance company accounting, rating agency, and regulatory capital regimes (Statutory, GAAP, IFRS, RBC, SMR, Solvency II, IAIS, etc) Strong knowledge of insurance industry capital structures and leverage considerations, particularly relating to rating agency methodologies and criteria for debt, hybrid and contingent capital instruments The Candidate will assume a central role within a multifunctional team that is responsible for a wide variety of projects, some of which include: Conducting research, analysis and financial modeling of current and pro forma financial positions to account for insurance company managements’ organic growth plans, mergers, acquisitions, divestitures and advise on financing instruments and optimal capital structure Coordinating and facilitating group idea generation and solutions across products and regions Preparing pitch books and other client marketing materials and assisting with preparation for client meetings Assisting in the development and continued cultivation of client relationships Maintaining internal databases to track comps, deal flow, capital markets activity and wallet share Qualifications and Skills Bachelors degree or MBA in Finance or Economics, with a minimum of 5 years corporate finance and capital markets experience with a top tier investment bank or rating agency Candidate must have experience in (and deep understanding of) the Insurance industry sector Transaction experience with Life (Re)Insurance & Annuity Companies is a must, with Non- Life and InsurTech experience viewed as a complementary or secondary priority Ability to synthesize large amounts of information and contribute to idea generation Strong project management skills, including experience leading a team of analysts and adhering to tight timelines Exemplary written and oral communication skills with an ability to convey ideas Ability to work independently, while also working effectively in a team environment Advanced proficiency with CapitalIQ, Bloomberg, and Microsoft Office Additional Requirements SMBC’s employees participate in a hybrid workforce model that provides employees with an opportunity to work from home, as well as, from an SMBC office.
