The Controller directs the Finance staff and accounting functions for Covenant House New Jersey, Inc.
This includes supervising 4 to 5 staff within the department, providing guidance and support to executive management.
Duties and responsibilities: Responsible for full cycle accounting function of the agency and audits (both annual agency audit and occasional CHI HQ internal audit).
Oversee annual tax filing (990), quarterly 941 reconciliation, issue 1099 and response to other external requests (finance related).
Manage general ledger, accounts payable, cash receipts and disbursements.
Maintain depreciation and property records.
Oversee fundraising related software/ system (i.
e.
Salesforce), suggest and/or implement changes to make the process and accounting integration more efficient, seamless and reduce redundancy.
Assists as needed with fundraising affairs and special events, which may be conducted outside the normal work schedule.
Interact with corporate office and vendors related to finance.
Assists and provide technical support to CFO in preparation of the annual agency budget.
Provide various programs/departments with contract level budgetary help.
Timely reporting of grants to program and funders.
Prepare financial reports to governmental agencies including but not limited to IRS Form 990 and NJ state annual charities registration return.
Develop and implement internal control systems and risk management policies to establish and maintain proper protection of CHNJ’s assets.
Update and develop process documentation and policy as needed and requested by management.
Required to check company e-mail daily.
Prepare and provide ad-hoc reports and/or analyses to address any need by the CFO and CEO.
Experience and Skills: Bachelor’s degree in accounting from an accredited college or university.
Minimum 5 years direct experience managing a corporate accounting function preferably in a non-profit or service setting.
Alternatively, accounting experiences in comprehensive accounting function including audit for 15 years or more with extensive knowledge in system integration and implementation in a non-profit environment.
Comprehensive knowledge of applicable Federal and NJ State laws related to accounting in a corporate or non-profit environment.
Excellent writing and verbal communication skills.
