Job Description
The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) keeps New York City healthy, safe, and clean by collecting, recycling, and disposing of waste, cleaning City streets and vacant lots, and clearing snow and ice.
DSNY is the nation's largest municipal sanitation agency, with nearly 10,000 employees, 59 district garages, and a fleet of more than 5,000 trucks, cars, and other types of equipment.
The Department clears litter, snow, and ice from approximately 6,500 miles of City streets and removes debris from vacant lots as well as abandoned vehicles from City streets.
The Bureau of Public Affairs seeks a Digital Communications Strategist.
Reporting to the Director of Communications within the Bureau of Public Affairs, the Digital Communications Strategist is the Department’s lead on social media communications, both proactive and reactive.
The Digital Communications Strategist will be responsible for planning, monitoring and evaluating social media communications on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Linkedin, and Tiktok, as well as, identifying new platforms as they emerge.
This position involves, both, writing and the creation of video content for the Department’s community initiatives and campaigns.
In addition to creating content and helping to craft the Department’s social media presence, this role has a substantial customer service component, responding to inquiries and following up both internally and externally.
Minimum Qualifications
1.
A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2.
High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3.
Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above.
However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.
Preferred Skills
- The ideal candidate has at least 5 years experience in social media, video production, and content creation.
- Creativity, collaboration, and attention to detail are all required.

Residency Requirement
New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment.
However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
